Holiday Traditions

Whatever holiday you celebrate, Christmas, Kwanza, Chanukah, Retail Capitalism, winter solstice, or just time off from work, I’m sure there are traditions that you have.  I would love to hear some of those, especially from outside the States.

My family always celebrated Christmas and we have several traditions. It would usually start with my brother and I going with Dad into the woods to find the perfect tree. We would cut it down and drag it back to the house. Put it up in the living room away from the fire-place and decorate it. Mom would always bake cookies and some years even make candy. Presents would start showing up under the tree and stockings were hung on the mantle over the fireplace.  Christmas Eve would have the family at church and when we got back home, my brother and I got to open one gift each. The rest would have to wait for Christmas morning. I don’t remember how this particular tradition got started, but it may have been to appease the pleading of my brother and I to open the gifts.

These are a few of the traditions I remember growing up. I really want to hear from you about your favorite holiday traditions. Please share a comment below.
