A-to-Z 2015 U is for Unselfish

Unselfish one should strive be all the time. Society seems to push us to be greedy, self-serving people. Sure you see the occasional ad for this or that charity, but the music, television, movies, books, etc. do not encourage one to be unselfish in many ways. The simple life that my grandparents lived showed me the importance of being unselfish. They were generous and loving people.  Being able to stop and help someone without thought of reciprocation or payment is a great feeling. Here’s hoping that we can encourage more people to be unselfish.

I agree that modern living puts a lot of emphasis on getting what you want out of life rather than thinking about how to help other’s more and if everyone could spend just a small part of their day actively being unselfish then people might notice that actually doing things for others also brings it own rewards that can’t be bought elsewhere.

Yes I think the big question is how do we promote that idea and get more people to think like that? Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!

Very true. It does seem like there’s more looking at for oneself than helping others out there. I think some people mistake selfishness for aggressive ambition, which the working world considers a good thing. At least in that arena.

My opinion is that aggressive ambition is is just as bad as being selfish. Ambition alone is not a bad thing but can very easily become all consuming. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

My boss is very unselfish. He shocked me this week, actually, when he gave me a raise because he wanted to “help me with my tuition” (a school I want to go to, which means quitting working for him)…. but he’s paying for it out of his own pension money.

The world could certainly use more unselfish people. The enormous self-absorption of today’s society is a huge problem in building community. Hopefully it can be turned around before it’s too late.
