Ice Cream Memories

Nice cool ice cream on a hot summer day. That is sure hard to beat. It is almost as refreshing as a dip in shady river or a lake. There is some thing about the cool creamy texture of ice cream that just makes all your cares melt away. As long as you are slowly licking at your ice cream cone or lazily spooning it from a bowl, the worries of the world just seem a little lighter. This is all the more true when sharing the ice cream with a friend.

Various ice cream flavors

One of my favorite summer destinations was on old-fashioned ice cream parlor on the main street in our sleepy little town. There was a player piano that you could put a dime in it and play a song. The ice cream was hand-made and so was the whipped cream. If you knew the person working the counter and the owner was not around, you could sneak behind the counter and take a hit of the nitrous oxide they used for the whipped cream. Tourists always wondered what we were laughing about. The store always chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. The strawberry was the best. It contained fresh local strawberries. There was none better. There were other flavors the came and went, but you could always count on the big three. Depending on who you ask, the top three ice cream flavors are:

Based on Consumption

  1. Vanilla
  2. Chocolate
  3. Strawberry

Based on popular vote

  1. Cookies and Cream
  2. Chocolate
  3. Mint Chocolate Chip

If you ask my wife

  1. Chocolate (all types of chocolate)
  2. Cookies and Cream
  3. Vanilla

Sometimes it all depends on who you ask and how you ask the question. To go with the ice cream, my top three posts this year are:

I’m with your wife on chocolate! My favourite “unusual” flavour growing up was Tiger Tail, so I still enjoy one on occasion for the nostalgia factor. Last fall I enjoyed the combination of pumpkin and pralines and cream, and it was one of the most delicious mixes ever.

I’m intrigued Susan. What is in Tiger Tail? I love experimenting with flavors. My wife leans the other way, although I have expanded her culinary horizons a bit. My single favorite to date is a Mexican Chocolate that is hand made by Justin’s Ice Cream on the River walk in San Antonio. It is rich homemade chocolate made with Mexican vanilla and cinnamon. Truly amazing. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

Tiger Tail is an orange ice cream with streaks of black licorice 🙂

        The Mexican Chocolate sounds wonderful.

Our local ice cream parlor was called the Gibson Girl, and it was a huge treat to go their during childhood. As a kid my favorite was bubble gum ice cream that actually had gum in it. As an adult I must go for chocolate, or coconut…or the two combined for pure heaven! 🙂

Ha! You sound like me Alex! I love chocolate, but any flavor will do, especially if it’s from Blue Bell or Hagendas or …. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
