Distraction and Life; Can You Manage?

What does distraction have to do with life? Everything. There are hundreds of thousands of tweets, texts, news clips, podcasts, books, television shows, movies, and other social media. vying for your time and attention. Did mention advertisers? Yeah, them too. Managing your distractions are a must.

Focus to manage distractionEasily said, but this requires a little discipline. Perhaps it also requires a bit of personal character or willpower. There are so many things happening everywhere around us. Radio, television, email, Facebook, Twitter, What’s App just to name a few. Sure, I know, but how do I manage all these things vying for my attention?

One simple way is to limit your distractions. Turn off your phone and email when working at your computer. Do not try to “multi-task.”  Very few people multi-task at useful level. Stephen Monsell found that for most of us, it just increases the time to switch between tasks versus staying on the same task.

Mindtools.com has a great article on multi-tasking and how to quit. Things like limiting your interruptions (cell phone, email, texts, etc.)

Consequences

What happens if I am not able to control my focus? The best case is you get behind on your work and you feel behind and disorganized. The worst, I hate to say, but could lead to death. Your life or someone else’s could be forfeit. Can you say, “texting and driving” anyone?

Would you want your doctor or pharmacist distracted? I think not.

weekend coffee share whirlwind editionWhat’s up with you? Let’s sit down over a virtual cup of coffee or perhaps tea and have a chat. Weekend Coffee Share whirlwind edition is all about chaos in my life. I have to say I love it.

Oh sure, I like some predictability, but that gets boring after a while. A certain amount of managed chaos is good. Your mind has to stretch to embrace new situations, new scenarios. Have you ever changed up your cup of coffee or tea? Maybe try it with honey instead of sugar or fresh cream instead of 2% milk.

How does change or chaos affect you? Me? I drink more coffee! 🙂

How do you adjust?

I think having some level of managed chaos or change, helps you deal with those things that you really have no control over what-so-ever. My theory is if you have some changes in your life that you manage, then it’s easier to deal with “things” that happen when you have no control.

Just my $0.02 for what it’s worth. How do you deal with change and chaos in your life? Do you embrace it? Run from it? Hope that it will just go away? I want to hear your thoughts.

Do you play to your strenghts? Developing Character

A little nudge

Do you play to your strengths? If your strength is helping or encouraging others or perhaps detailed management or keeping a good perspective, do you play to your strengths?Well do you? Often people look at their weak area to improve themselves. While this can certainly help, according to John Maxwell, we are better served by improving our strengths. The example he gives in his book, Leadership Gold, is that of Tiger Woods. When Tiger has a bad game he goes to the driving range and practices for hours. He is focusing on his area for strength, golf. He isn’t concerned about improving his financial management or his cooking skills. The focus is on improving weak areas of major skillset.

A strange creature

What can you do to improve your areas of strength? Hopefully you have one or more areas. Maybe you aren’t sure what they are. Ask a trusted friend or mentor to help you find your strengths and then chose an area that you can hone.

Set a goal for yourself to improve and measure it. Follow up with your mentor every week. No really, this is important, we all need a willing accountability partner that we trust.

Changing is hard work. Getting help makes sense. Setting some goals and having at least an outline of plan is critical. Improving is not only good for you and those around you, but it’s good for the world.

Why it matters

If each of us can improve a small amount every day, we can vastly improve the world in which we live. The idea stems from a quote by Emerson that states, “Men of character are the conscience of the society in which they live.” If you paraphrase and expand this thought, you can say that good people are the fabric of society. Once accepted, then it is a small step to say that as people improve, society improves and thus our world improves.

The population of the planet is over 7 billion. If even half of these people improve a slight amount, the overall improvement is HUGE. Do your part.

Why do we care about improving ourselves? Does self improvement matter? I think the answer to both questions are found in the following quote:

Self ImprovementEmerson implies that for society, the group containing all of us, to have a conscience, there exist people of character. By character, we assume he means good character. This begs the question, what is good character? I think we all understand at some level what most people consider good character. How do we go about developing or improving character? How do we help each other?

Helping Improve Character

There are many ways to approach self improvement. Learn a new skill or language. Read a book. Improve your vocabulary. Work on building trust. It really depends on why you are trying to improve.

If you want to improve your life and those around you, work on improving your character. You may have great character, but we can all improve. We all have areas that could use some polish.

How do you improve?

Start by taking an honest look at your life. Get feedback from a trusted friend or mentor. Pick one thing, trait or area to focus on for your self improvement effort. Then the hardest part is to take action and keep repeating until the desired improvement is complete.

Encourage others to join you in your journey. They do not have to pick the same area you chose. People need a nudge or sometimes a shove to get started on journey that is difficult. And let me tell you, that the journey to improve is not only endless, it contains pot-holes, trip-wires, land mines and many other things that will derail you.

When that happens, you and your mentor go back to your plan and adjust as needed.
