Journey Continues

Day 1 for me was going well. As the journey continues along the Whole30 path, eggs for breakfast was a nice change from my protein shake. I can’t have the protein shake on the diet because it has soy and sugar. Gotta read those labels folks.

And then I made it to work. One of our project managers walks in and offers everyone a candied apple. It stared at me like a crocodile. She had made them over the weekend. I politely refused, drooling just a bit, and then had to explain why. So far so good as the journey continues. You can read about Teri’s Day 1 here.

Just making a little improvement everyday. Maybe it’s the weather or just mental, but I’m feeling great today. Ate my raw carrots for a snack and then took a brief walk in the sun before lunch. Heated my savory sage chicken and coconut milk gravy. Although the gravy turned out more like a heavy broth, it was really tasty. I left out the mushrooms because Teri doesn’t like them. Ate my apple for my afternoon snack.

Arriving home, we had dinner. We prepared dinners and lunches for the week on Sunday. Makes it easier when you just have pull things out of the fridge and reheat them. The entrée was ground pork with onions and spiced just a bit. The side dish, to use Teri’s description, was weird. I have to agree. Who thought to make cauliflower look like rice. It does NOT taste like it all. No matter how good your imagination, it is NOT rice.

So far so good. Yeah it’s only day 1, but hey we started and survived 1 day. Tomorrow brings a new day and new challenges. The ultimate goal? Good health and improving the odds of a long and productive life. Teri and I have many places in the world yet to visit. Some of them will require being in good shape. For instance we are planning to hike Mt Kilimanjaro for my 60th birthday. The journey continues.

What does distraction have to do with life? Everything. There are hundreds of thousands of tweets, texts, news clips, podcasts, books, television shows, movies, and other social media. vying for your time and attention. Did mention advertisers? Yeah, them too. Managing your distractions are a must.

Focus to manage distractionEasily said, but this requires a little discipline. Perhaps it also requires a bit of personal character or willpower. There are so many things happening everywhere around us. Radio, television, email, Facebook, Twitter, What’s App just to name a few. Sure, I know, but how do I manage all these things vying for my attention?

One simple way is to limit your distractions. Turn off your phone and email when working at your computer. Do not try to “multi-task.”  Very few people multi-task at useful level. Stephen Monsell found that for most of us, it just increases the time to switch between tasks versus staying on the same task.

Mindtools.com has a great article on multi-tasking and how to quit. Things like limiting your interruptions (cell phone, email, texts, etc.)

Consequences

What happens if I am not able to control my focus? The best case is you get behind on your work and you feel behind and disorganized. The worst, I hate to say, but could lead to death. Your life or someone else’s could be forfeit. Can you say, “texting and driving” anyone?

Would you want your doctor or pharmacist distracted? I think not.

Self Improvement

Why do we care about improving ourselves? Does self improvement matter? I think the answer to both questions are found in the following quote:

Self ImprovementEmerson implies that for society, the group containing all of us, to have a conscience, there exist people of character. By character, we assume he means good character. This begs the question, what is good character? I think we all understand at some level what most people consider good character. How do we go about developing or improving character? How do we help each other?

Helping Improve Character

There are many ways to approach self improvement. Learn a new skill or language. Read a book. Improve your vocabulary. Work on building trust. It really depends on why you are trying to improve.

If you want to improve your life and those around you, work on improving your character. You may have great character, but we can all improve. We all have areas that could use some polish.

How do you improve?

Start by taking an honest look at your life. Get feedback from a trusted friend or mentor. Pick one thing, trait or area to focus on for your self improvement effort. Then the hardest part is to take action and keep repeating until the desired improvement is complete.

Encourage others to join you in your journey. They do not have to pick the same area you chose. People need a nudge or sometimes a shove to get started on journey that is difficult. And let me tell you, that the journey to improve is not only endless, it contains pot-holes, trip-wires, land mines and many other things that will derail you.

When that happens, you and your mentor go back to your plan and adjust as needed.

Developing character is hard work. What are some things we should all consider when developing character? The first, in my opinion is figure out one thing to focus on improving. Do

not try to tackle everything. Be specific. Figure out where to start. Everyone needs a little help now and then. Find a friend or mentor that you trust. Someone from whom you expect honest feedback and more importantly, someone to whom you will listen. You must accept open criticism and suggestions from them. In return, they will help you improve and help you stay on track. in your journey to grow.

Start Here

Figure out one thing that you really want to improve. Maybe it’s your honesty, being more trustworthy or perhaps more helpful. Here is a list of traits to help you think about areas to build. Lifehack also has some ways to grow. A more academic approach is to study a 36 week course. That is a little too intense for most of us. Perhaps just sticking with one thing at a time is best.

Take Action

Developing CharacterMaking a decision is a beginning. Without action, however, you will not succeed. Action which will need to be repeated over and over until it becomes habit.

Daily Plan

Set your daily plan for developing character. Keep it small and manageable. Focus on one piece of one area. For example, you want to improve your driving courtesy. One aspect of this is to slow down. Maybe you need to leave for all of your appoints 15 minutes earlier than usual. Do that everyday for a week and see how it goes.

Weekly Review

Improving YourselfThe weekly review requires honesty from both you and your mentor. You must be willing to truthfully report your successes and failures. Discuss options to improve or prevent future negative outcomes. As with the above example leaving 15 minutes earlier for appointments, you only yelled at other drivers half as much as before. That is a great improvement and should be celebrated. Now focus on ideas to get the number of drivers you yell at down to zero.

Repeat Until Done

Repeat until done. The real kicker here is that you are never done.

Much like carving a marble statue, it takes time, dedication and effort. This journey is not for the faint of heart. You’ve read this far, now take some action.

  1. Make a decision and pick an area to grow
  2. Take action – find an accountability partner
  3. Set up a daily plan for small improvements
  4. Review weekly with your mentor
  5. Repeat until you have a new habit
